Zomba City elects new mayor

Newly-elected Zomba City Council (ZCC) mayor Christopher Jana has pledged to sustain the projects her predecessor Melia Douglas initiated.

He made the pledge on Friday in ZCC chamber after ascending to the mayorship with five votes against three votes that Douglas and councillor Eda Nkula each got in the race.

Jana: We will transform the city

“My objective is to ensure that together with the councillors, the secretariat and the city’s residents, we transform the face of the city,” he said.

However, before the elections, Jana, who was elected on People’s Party (PP) ticket in 2014, surprised the chamber when he declared that he has defected from PP to the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

He denied allegations that he joined DPP to accumulate votes in the election.

“Neither has DPP given me money for the PP exit, it’s my personal choice,” he said.

Zomba Central Constituency legislator Patricia Kainga (PP) commended Jana for the elevation and pledged support to his office for the benefit of Zomba City.

Jana is the third mayor for the city since the country reintroduced councillors in 2014. The first mayor was Joana Ntaja who died barely a year in office and was succeeded by Douglas.n
