Zomba City Council, with support from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, has donated assorted goods to families affected by heavy rains and winds in the city.

Speaking during the presentation of the items in Chirunga Ward on Monday, Zomba City Council mayor Benson Bullah thanked government for the support and encouraged people to plant trees as they help in reducing effects of natural disasters.

He also encouraged the city’s residents to report to the council whenever they are affected by natural disasters, saying, “the council is always available to intervene in such cases”.

The heavy rains also destroyed five houses at Zomba Police College whose occupants also benefitted from the donation.

One of the beneficiaries, Sub-inspector Memory Kweche thanked the council for the donation, saying it will go a long way in alleviating some of the challenges people whose homes were destroyed are facing.

The donated items included rice, beans and blankets.

Each beneficiary received two blankets, 25 kilogrammes (kg) of rice and 4.9 kg of beans.

At least 82 households benefited from the donation.

Four of the 10 wards in the city, namely Chirunga, Likangala, Mpira and Central Ward benefited from the donation.
