The 2016 Tour de Dwangwa Cycling Race which took place last Sunday, turned into a family affair after a couple Steven Mapepa and Mervis Kadewere of Zomba Cycling Club, won two of the three professional categories.
Mapepa took first position in the men’s professional mountain bike category while his wife outclassed seven other cyclists to win the ladies professional mountain bike category.
The race started from Kande in Nkhata Bay to Chitowe Stadium in Dwangwa.
Blantyre Cycling Club earned the drop handle category through Misi Kanthumba.
“It feels good to be the champion. But it was not easy. Enough preparations has given me the current stand,” said Kanthumba.
Mapepa and Kanthumba got an SDV Mountain Bike each for emerging champions.
Kadewere received an electric lamp and a bale of sugar.
The race is used to raise funds for Round Table 69, a non governmental organisation (NGO), to support communities around Dwangwa.
Illovo Dwangwa Estate general manager Lal Bachan, who was also the guest of honour, assured the organisers of the race of Illovo’s continued support. n
