Zomba City deputy mayor Davie Maunde has said Malawi can transform from poverty to prosperity if farmers invest their time and resources into agribusiness.

Maunde said this last Thursday at Gymkhana Club ground in Zomba during an agriculture marketing fair organised by the district’s agricultural office under the theme Access to Improved Inputs, Loans and Value Addition Key to High Quality Production for Better Markets.

The fair was held to create a platform for farmers to learn how their colleagues, seed multipliers, banks and other stakeholders in the sector are advancing in agribusiness.

Maunde further said the country’s wealth lies in the soil; hence, farmers need to be creative to benefit more from farming.

He said if done properly, crop diversification, animal husbandry and irrigation can contribute to the improvement of the economy.

Said Maunde: “Work hard in your agricultural endeavours to produce quality crops, meat, milk as well as other agricultural products to attract more customers.”

One of the farmers who inspired the audience with his pigeon farming, Yona Mkwinda, agreed with Maunde that diversification can boost agribusiness in the country.

He said: “Most customers buy the pigeons than any other livestock I raise. As a result, my profits per annum are very good.”

Zomba district agricultural division officer(Dado) Patterson Kandoje commended the farmers for their exhibitions and urged them to champion agribusiness to develop the country. n
