The Lions Club of Zomba on Sunday inducted new members to its fold during a ceremony held at Gymkhana Club in the old capital.

The function saw outgoing president Edward Mbesa handing over the mantle to Alister Munthali whose term of office started on July 1 2012.

Mbesa highlighted achievements undertaken during his tenure such as tree-planting, cheering the sick and commissioning of solar project at Chamba Health Centre in the district.

Munthali, on the other hand, said he would focus on contributing to making social services accessible to children with disabilities.

He said government needs to be supported in making society inclusive.

“People with disabilities generally have problems in accessing social services and government has for the past few years initiated inclusive education in the mainstream schools.

“We are glad that Southern Region Water Board has donated K3.5 million to run our projects and with this support, we would like to construct school blocks which will be a resource centre for children with disabilities,” he said.

Munthali’s committee includes Doreen Mponela (secretary), Kondwani Munthali (treasurer), Humphrey Mkandawire (fund-raising), Dorothy Nampota (scholarships), Esmie Kadzamira (publicity), Gibby Msukwa (legal adviser) and Steve Carr who is responsible for projects.
