Zomba City Council Mayor Benson Bulla on Christmas Day took time off to cheer patients admitted to Zomba Central Hospital.
During the visit, the mayor handed out 80 parcels of gifts which were shared among patients in the wards.
Each of the packages included sugar, bread, laundry soap, bath soap, toilet soap and body lotion. The presents were worth K250 000.
Speaking later, Bulla said he undertook the gesture to ensure that the patients do not feel isolated during the festive season.
He said: “Most of them [the patients], including the guardians will not be spending time with their families as it is expected. This is the reason I decided to visit them and share the spirit of Christmas.”
In his vote of thanks, Zomba Central Hospital director Martias Joshua commended the mayor for the gesture, saying it will alleviate the resource challenges faced by most patients,.
The mayor visited the female ward, tuberculosis ward and prison ward.
