This year’s National Spelling Bee Competition got underway on Saturday at Bambino International High School in Lilongwe where 34 schools took part in the contest.

The colourful event was opened by the Ministry of Education Directorate of Basic Education. The contest brought 131 students for the secondary school category and 336 primary school spellers.

The children put up a splendid performance as they took it confidently to the microphone to spell difficult and tricky words.

By the end of the day 112 out of 366 junior spellers got their words correct and qualified for the Regional Bee Round.

Speaking to the spellers, parents and teachers that filled the hall before the contest, principal education officer in the Directorate of Basic Education, Dickens Mbewa, hailed the spellers for taking bold steps to participate in what he termed as the most prestigious educational programme in Malawi.

“The Malawi National Spelling Bee Programme has the potential to positively impact on the lives of children as it promotes reading culture,” he said.

Mbewa also encouraged schools to capitalise on the learning aspect and not just the winning part.

In an earlier interview, Mkwichi Secondary School teacher Constance Thawale said the competition is important to students because it improves their knowledge in English.

Malawi National Spelling Bee is an educational fun activity in which children compete in spelling out difficult words and is televised.
