4 athletes in Zambia for Olympics qualifiers

Four athletes left the country yesterday for Lusaka, Zambia to take part in a 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualifying championship on Saturday at Heroes Stadium.

Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) general secretary John Kaputa said in a statement issued on Tuesday that the four are Stern Lifa, Gift Kawale, Mercy Malembo and Asimenye Simwaka, who is also a national women’s football team player.

Part of the team: Lifa

According to MOC, Zambia Athletics Association invited Malawi to participate in the competition dubbed All Comers Tournament, which will also act as qualifiers for Olympics.

Kaputa said Lifa and Kawale will compete in short distance sprinting 100 and 200-metre events.

“Asimenye will compete in short distance and middle distance 400 metres while Mercy Malembo will take part in 1 500 and 3 000 metres,” he said.

The team, which has travelled by road, is led by James Mangani as team manager and coach Pachisi Nyasulu.

Nyasulu said all the athletes are in good shape.

“They have all been working very hard. We have been in camp for only a month, but luckily enough, we had a tournament in November so some of the athletes’ fitness was good.

“We have worked on speed endurance, fitness and we had just started working on speed,” he said.
