Chakwera hands over police houses, urges hard work

President Lazarus Chakwera has urged everyone from Cabinet to public institutions, statutory corporations and foreign missions to work hard as it is the only way to keep their jobs.

He said no one should think they would keep their job simply because of their tribe or region of origin or because they are popular on social media or belong to Malawi Congress Party (MCP) or the Tonse Alliance.

The President made the remarks in Mangochi yesterday when he handed over 15 houses built, under the ongoing security agents housing project, for Malamya Police Mobile Service Camp.

He said no one would protect their job because of their gender, or because they hold a parliamentary seat for a vocal constituency.

“My only mission is to serve Malawians, and so I will not keep anyone I have appointed to a position of service when it becomes clear that they are failing to do their job and failing to produce the results I promised to deliver to Malawians.

“So, if you have been appointed to any public office by me, ask yourself this question today and every day: Is there someone who can do my job better than I am doing it now? If the answer is yes, then you should know that that person is the one Malawi needs in the position you hold, and my job is to find them,” said Chakwera.

He also thanked a team from DEC Construction Company for their performance in constructing the houses.

“Some people have the wrong idea that it is the President that gives contracts to companies, but the fact is that this is a country of laws, and anyone wanting a contract must follow the procedures laid down by law. I have never met the owners of this company before today, but I hear that this is a Malawian company,” said the President.

He launched the project to construct 10 000 houses for the Malawi Defence Force, the Malawi Police Service, the Malawi Prison Service, and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services in December 2021, and the 15 houses are part of this project.

Chakwera also urged police officers to be professional. Later in the day the President addressed a political rally at Malindi Community ground.
