Paramount Chief Lundu has called on the Chewas in Malawi to unite and respect each other.

He said this on Saturday at Mkumano wa Achewa Fundraising event at Civo stadium in Lilongwe as they prepare for this year’s Kulamba Cultural event.

The chief said it is good for the tribe to come together once in a while and celebrate their beautiful culture.

Lundu said: “Let me also take an opportunity to warn those other chiefs who think we are a group of thugs because that’s not true. You should know that we just want unity and you can never separate me from Gawa Undi because we come from afar.

“Malawi is a country on its own and we should be celebrating our culture, if there is a time we want to out we can also do that but as a nation we can also celebrate our culture.”

In an interview, the event chairperson Senior Chief Sosola thanked the people who graced the event.

He said Mkumano wa Achewa was organised for Achewa to come together because there have been some misunderstandings.

He said:“The misunderstandings that are among us, have come because some people tell our Gawa Undi and Lundu lies to bring disunity, but you should know that we want peace.

“After meeting with more than 13 senior traditional authorities concerning this event they thought it wise to move on with the celebrations because this was the first time for Achewa to meet so no one could stop this.”

Sosola also dismissed assertions that they did not follow the right protocols in installing Tay Grin as the event’s ambassador.

He later asked the Chewa Heritage Foundation (Chefo) to change how they operate as they are bringing disunity in the group.

The event on Saturday happened in the background of a rift between the Chefo executive committee and the organising committee of the event.

Last week, the executive committee announced the postponment of the event after it reportedly dissolved the organising committee.

The committee further said it did not recognise Tay Grin as the event’s ambassador.
