Vice-President Saulos Chilima has assured Malawians that government is working hard to deal with socioeconomic problems facing the country.
He made the assurance on Sunday at Mzuzu Shoprite Roundabout when he addressed UTM Party supporters on his arrival for a tour of duty in the North to check progress on public sector reforms.
Besides rising cost of living, the country is facing scarcity of basic goods such as cooking oil and sugar as well as a shortage of foreign exchange.
Said Chilima: “We know the problems we are facing. Let me assure you that we will find solutions to these problems.
“The President [Lazarus Chakwera] was here recently and he also assured you of this.”
Only UTM Party supporters were available to welcome Chilima. There were no party supporters for other alliance partners such as Malawi Congress Party and Alliance for Democracy.
While in the North, Chilima will conduct quarterly reviews of reforms for the six districts, starting with Chitipa and Karonga today [Monday].
Reforms projects to be monitored in Chitipa are the emergency treatment unit at the district hospital and council offices while in Karonga, he will monitor dyke project and the production of briquettes in Karonga.
In Rumphi, the Veep will monitor a community-based early flood warning system, before heading to Nkhata Bay District Hospital to appreciate the paying ward, restaurant and printing services as well as standardised primary examinations at St Maria Goretti School.
When President Chakwera visited the North recently, he said government would not pretend that everything was rosy but promised that the challenges are being dealt with.
He said: “We are here so that we discuss the changing prices of goods because this government will not run away from the challenges that we are facing. However, we need to meet the challenges straight on, and look at best things for Malawians.”
Chilima is serving a second-term as Vice- President, having been in the same position under former president Peter Mutharika.
Under the Democratic Progressive Party regine, Chilima was also in charge of reforms.
