DC warns officers against shortcuts

Nsanje district commissioner Dr Medson Matchaya has said he will deal with officers who do not follow procedures and guidelines when discharging their duties.

He issued the warning on Monday during an extraordinary full council meeting where Ruo Ward councillor Marko Molutali alleged that a supplier was paid without supplying borehole spare parts.

Matchaya: I will not shield anyone

Matchaya said: “I am shocked to learn through the meeting that a supplier in Nsanje North Constituency has been paid without supplying the said spare parts.

“As a controlling officer, I will not shield anyone and I will launch an investigation on the allegations right away.”

He added that he had already requested for an auditor to establish what happened.

“There is no justification for public officers to make shortcuts. Government business has to be done following procedures and guidelines. As such anyone found doing the opposite must be held accountable,” Matchaya said.

The meeting also approved an extended overdraft facility for two months with FDH Bank

The extension approval comes days after the expiry of the facility on December 31 2021, which forced the bank to withhold October salaries for direct council employees.

Council chairperson Rose Makiyi said the approval will see the workers getting their salaries.

Meanwhile, council members have commended the secretariat for following the right procedures in seeking the extension.

However, the council has advised the Department of Finance and the Finance Committee to find a lasting solution to financial problems the council is facing.
