On Sunday, Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa was turned into another entertainment hub following an excellent organisation of dance and music feast by Salama Africa.

Dubbed ‘Rumble in the Jungle’, the event came as the second biggest cultural and talent show after Tumaini Festival at the refugee camp this year.

During the event, both emerging musicians and dancers from Dzaleka Refugee Camp showcased their talents.

Headlined by hip-hop artist Charisma of Kubanda Kubanda fame and Dav Mak, the music and dance performances were flawless.

It attracted over 2 000 patrons who enjoyed every moment of the event.

Dzaleka Refugee Camp-based artist Delvas Lyon opened the stage followed by Dav Mak.

Later, Charisma took the audience by storm with his dazzling stage work and hit songs.

Charisma did not only prove an inspiration to most up-and-coming artists from the camp, but also a hot stage item to handle.

Toussaint Farini, organiser of the event, said: “What we are trying to do is to showcase different impressive and hidden talents from Dzaleka Refugee Camp. We also have a goal of bringing refugees and Malawians together and show them that our similarities matter more than our differences.”

He said talent from camp was not yet known in Malawi thus they were working on promoting it.

“The impact of dance is very positive and it has impacted and changed our narrative in the country. But we are also cultivating music at the camp,” said Farini who is also the co-founder and executive director of Salama Africa.

Charisma said he was excited to perform at the event, adding that he was welcomed warmly.

He said: “It was an honour for me to be invited to the event whose goal was more than entertaining people. The event promotes coexistence among Malawians and refugees at Dzaleka. One thing that strikes me most is that there is enormous hidden talent at the camp which needs exposure.”
