Eagles soar high 

Blue Eagles maintained their perfect start to the 2022 TNM Super League season with a 1-0 win over Moyale Barracks yesterday at Mzuzu Stadium.

The result saw the Malawi Police Service sponsored side staying put at the top of the table  with nine points from three matches.

Chikondi Mvula gave Blue Eagles the lead after scoring from a rebound in stoppage time after Stuart Mbunge’sshot was blocked by Moyale goalkeeperSimeon Harawa.

Blue Eagles could have grabbed another goal after piling pressure on Moyale in  added time, but Micium Mhone’s shot was blocked.

Speaking in a post-match interview, Blue Eagles coach Elia Kananji said he is happy his charges worked hard to collect maximum points away in Mzuzu.

“We reserved some key players to study Moyale and when  we introduced them later, it worked. We got the goal in the dying minutes and earned the needed maximum points,” he said.

On his part, Moyale coach Pritchard Mwansa said the defence relaxed towards the end of the game and their opponents capitalised on the mistake.

“It is painful loss. It is sad that we failed to collect maximum points at home. We could have avoided defeat today but our defence relaxed towards the end of the game,” he said.

At Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, Nyasa Big Bullets contained stubborn Ekwendeni Hammers to beat them 3-1.

After a scrapy start that saw Hammers dominating the match, Bullets got their act together and took a lead through McFarlen Mgwira’s 32nd minute strike.

The defending champions added another in the 55th minute after a clinical finish from Babatunde Adepoje.

But Ekwendeni pulled one back through Joseph Mbewe in the 67th minute, following communication breakdown between Bullets defence and goalkeeper Richard Chimbamba.

What followed was a nervy 30 minutes as Ekwendeni threatened to grab an equaliser.

Bullets coach Kallisto Pasuwa praised his charges for responding positively after a poor start.

He said: “The first 35 minutes were scrappy. We only got a goal but we were not playing well the opposition was on top of us in everything that we were doing. But the players did well and second-half we settled well and got those two goals.”

Ekwendeni coach Etson Kadenge Mwafulirwa wore a brave face despite the loss.

He said: “We started well, but our opponents used experience.”

Meanwhile, Mafco suffered a 0-2 loss to Red Lions at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe with goals from Chikoti Chirwa I’m the 57th minute and Ronald Pangani in the 70th minute.
