Fam puts on hold soccer calendar

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) says it has shelved its plan to change the football calendar from March-December to August-May due to effects of Covid-19.

FAM competitions and communications director Gomezgani Zakazaka said in an interview yesterday that with the TNM Super League set to kick off on February 26, they will maintain the old calendar.

He said: “Following the delay to kick off last season in November last year, the plan was that we would wind up by May-June so that we could kick off the next season in August in line with many other leagues around the world.

“Unfortunately, effects of Covid-19 continued to take a toll and we had another break which meant we could not meet our plans.

“So, for now, we will maintain the old calendar.”

Zakazaka said a FAM competitions sub-committee slated for Saturday will define the way forward.

He also said the meeting will come up with a full calendar of events for the season.

“Only the TNM Super League was given a tentative kick off date which was approved by the FAM executive, otherwise, dates for all the other activities will be known after that meeting,” said Zakazaka.

He also stressed that despite the delay in the club licensing process, which includes inspection of match venues and payment of affiliation fees, unless something crops us, the TNM Super League will kick off on February 26 as planned.

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) general secretary Williams Banda also said they are going ahead as planned.

“Kick off is 26th February 2022. There is progress on club licensing, so we are good to go,” he said.

On when they plan to release the fixtures, the Sulom GS, sounding ice-cool, said: “We have the draft fixtures ready and once the clubs pay the affiliation fees, we’ll do the needful because they will now be affiliated to the league.
