The Film Association of Malawi (Fama) says the shortage of funds, and infrastructure, as well as lack of patriotism in the acting sector, are contributing to poor film production in the country.

Fama president and film director Gift Sukali, popularly known as Sukez, said this in an interview on Tuesday when asked what lessons Malawi can learn from the film industries of neighbouring countries such as Zambia, which are thriving.

Sukali: The acting sector is not considered in the budget

He said it is worrisome that government does not support the film industry financially as it does with other sectors.

Said Sukali: “We approached the government several times and about two months ago we held demonstrations in Lilongwe requesting the government to pass a bill to have an Acting or Film Council like in Zambia.

“It seems the acting sector in the country is not considered in the budget in which there is little or no money invested, and most filmmakers use their own resources.”

He also bemoaned lack of infrastructure as another stumbling block to the development of the film industry in the country.

Sukali implored sponsors and other well-wishers to lend a hand in promoting the country’s film industry.

“It will be a great opportunity if we have our own channel on DStv or GoTV, just like Mzansi Magic and One Zed for South Africans and Zambians, respectively. Therefore, the DStv Multichoice should also consider Malawian content by giving filmmakers an  opportunity to apply and earn commission to produce movies and TV series,” he said.

In a seperate interview, comedian Felistus Ngwira, popularly known by the stage name Nya Uyu, called for collective effort between the new blood and legends in the acting industry if Malawi.

“It takes God’s grace for new blood to get into systems in the Malawian film industry. Zambian creatives collaborate a lot and they also get a lot of support from public and private sectors. In Malawi mostly, you need connections to make things work,” she said.

Actor, scriptwriter and director, Ashukile Mwakisulu said Fama is working to promote a positive and productive acting sector.

Fama was established in 2011 with the aim of promoting the film industry in Malawi.
