Government, partners set aside K6bn for food response
Development partners, in collaboration with the Malawi Government, have committed $8.2 million (about K6.7 billion) to support the implementation of the 2021/2022 lean season response to support food- insecure households in the Southern Region.
The money will help to reduce food gaps, protect and restore livelihoods and prevent acute malnutrition.
Each of the beneficiaries will receive K18 000 per month for three months in Nsanje and Chikwawa and for two months in the other districts.
Former minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare Patricia Kaliati, who received the cheque on behalf of Malawi Government in Lilongwe on Monday, described the gesture as a huge commitment by both government and development partners to realise Sustainable Development Goal Number one of ending poverty.
Union Ambassador Rune Skinnebach said they are keen to support the lean season response as part of its contribution to strengthen and institutionalise mechanisms for shock- sensitive social protection.
United Nations resident coordinator Rudolf Schwenk said the UN is proud to be part of the shock-sensitive social protection and innovation agenda to support the country’s national social protection system.
