Minister of Homeland Security Richard Chimwendo Banda says government plans to recruit 3 000 police officers this year to beef up law enforcement personnel.

He said this on Friday in Blantyre when he inspected the new Blantyre Police Office Complex under construction.

The minister said government plans to construct similar facilities in regional offices to accommodate more officers.

Said Chimwendo Banda: “Malawi Police Service [MPS] does not have enough infrastructure in terms of offices and housing.

“Upon its completion, we will consider building similar facilities in regional offices.”

He also said he was impressed with the quality of the work at the construction site and the progress so far.

Inspector General of Police George Kainja said the new police infrastructure is the first of its kind in the country and it will be handed over to MPS by December.

He said housing and office space is a big challenge for MPS, noting that the office will ease space of the new recruits.

The three-year project was scheduled to be completed in April 15 2019 to April 15 2022, but contractors have extended the completion date to December 13 2022.
