Gwaladi rides on controversy again

If there is one artist that has never been short of controversy, then the self-styled musician Joe Gwaladi ticks all the boxes.

His no-holds barred compositions and lifestyle outside the studio never seem to slow down his artistic pursuits. If anything, it earns him more followership.

Gwaladi: They need to listen carefully

And he is not worried with what other people make of his style: “Those who talk bad about my music have not listened to it carefully. I am not worried with what they say. There is a lot of meaning and sense in my compositions.”

True to his words, he is a man who is not fazed as his latest release Muchunu Ndimwabwino can attest. Just like his many other compositions, the latest offering dwells on the suggestive and overly daring line.

In the song, he is saluting what he refers to as the power which the waist possesses as being responsible for what a lot of women have managed to earn. He does not stop there. He also talks of how some women perceived to be ugly are getting married at the expense of the beautiful ones.

Anthu akuguliridwa magalimoto eee, mkazi ndikumayendetsa, nkhani yake ndi muchunu. Muchunu ndimabwino. Anthu akuyiwala makolo awo, kumanga nyumba kuchikamwini, nkhani yake ndi muchunu…goes part of the song.

Gwaladi says the song is the first of the two singles that he has released this year in what he calls his comeback bid. The other single is titled Omwewa Amene Anamupereka. The artist said last year he released six singles but they failed to get popular.

“That time I was in the village, so I think I was thinking like a villager. Now I am back in town and you can see from the way I am doing things. The feedback the songs have received shows that I am really back,” he said with his bravado attitude.

Gwaladi said his style is a special gift to him and he won’t back down to what his distractors say.

He said: “I sing about the realities around us. I sing about what the eyes can see. Above all I sing for Malawians.”

Music commentator Hessie Ndevu said the new song is an illustration of the artist he has been.

He said the artist has cemented a reputation of touching on issues that society is afraid to talk about openly.

“His style is not one which can appeal to the elite category. But, for his fans and people who resonate with his style will surely love this one,” he said.
