Human Rights Defenders Coalition ( H R D C ) has described the two years of the Tonse Alliance administration as painful for Malawians going through the toughest economic times.

In a press statement issued yesterday and signed by national chairperson Gift Trapence, the coalition said President Lazarus Chakwera and his nine political-party alliance have failed to live up to people’s expectations with visible signs of economic misdirection characterised by rising unemployment and cost of essential goods.

Trapence: The economy has been mismanaged

Reads the statement: “All major fundamentals show that 24 months after the revolution, the economic situation at both macro and micro levels has deteriorated because the economy has been mismanaged.”

HRDC further accused the administration of wasteful spending and general lack of financial discipline leading to huge debts.

Reacting to the sentiments, Minister of Information and Digitisation Gospel Kazako said HRDC was “saying all this because they have elected and chosen not to see the progress we are making”.

Kazako: They have elected and chosen not to see the progress

In a written response, he said: “They have decided to ignore that most of the factors that have created a different economic situation are motivated by global economic trends.”

Kazako, who is the official government spokesperson, said the Tonse Alliance administration believes its efforts to fix the broken systems is bearing fruits.

He said: “The systems were rotten to an extent of creating a free for all in the past 26 years. This is the time we need to stand together as a nation.”

The Tonse Alliance dislodged the Democratic Progressive Party in the court-sanctioned Fresh Presidential Election on June 23 2020, riding on their promise to deliver Malawians from nepotism, poverty, organised corruption and to fix the sick economy.n
