Livingstonia uranium deposits rising

Listen to this article

Lotus Resources Limited has said the inaugural mineral resource estimate for the Livingstonia uranium deposit has increased to 51.1 pounds of uranium oxide.

This follows a recent exploration success at the Livingstonia Project that confirmed results from historical drilling as well as extending the resource footprint through some preliminary step-out drilling.

Bowes: Drilling has expanded

A statement from Lotus Resources Limited dated June 9 shows that drilling has expanded to the northern and north-eastern limits of the resource at Livingstonia beyond the historic resource extents.

Reads the statement signed by Lotus Resources Limited managing director Keith Bowes: “As we have previously commented, Livingstonia is not part of the current production strategy at the Kayelekera project nor our definitive feasibility study work.

“However, it has the potential to become a satellite operation in the future once the Kayelekera resource has been depleted.”

Natural Resources Committee of Parliament chairperson Werani Chilenga urged government to ensure that communities benefit from the project.

“Kayelekera is a large-scale mining activity and it is not just Livingstonia for them because they have also extended from Kayelekera,” he said.

Mining governance expert Elyvin Chawinga said it is high time Malawi learnt from previous mistakes and make things right.

Earlier, Minister of Mining Albert Mbawala said Malawi stands to benefit from the mining activities.
