Machinga District director of health and social services Arnold Kapachika says the district has registered two cholera deaths.

In an interview on Monday, he said the cholera outbreak has been recorded in Mthipo Village, Traditional Authority Chikweo in the district.

He said the deaths and some of the registered cases include members of Apostolic Church members who went for a camping  in Zalewa, Blantyre recently.

Machinga District Hospital was the first to report a cholera
case in the country

Said Kapachika: “On May 21 this year, all Apostolic Church members at Mthipo Village went to Zalewa where they had a church camp.

“While at the camp, one of the deceased’s children started ‘purging’ and died. The body was transferred from Zalewa to Mthipo on May 26 where it was buried.

“A day later, the mother died after having episodes of diarrhoea which severely dehydrated her.”

He further said two cholera patients have been admitted to Chikweo Health Centre.

Last Friday, the Ministry of Health concluded the first phase of the cholera vaccination campaign.

The ministry’s health environmental health officer Wiseman Chimwaza told The Nation on Sunday that the campaign, which targeted 1.9 million people in eight districts of the Southern Region, has been successful.

As of Monday, the country had cumulatively registered 508 cases of cholera with 24 deaths.
