Malawi: State of unpunished crimes

It is a sad state of affairs that Malawi is degenerating into a crime scene. What is even worse is that no one, even those caught pants down in the crime go unpunished.

Just amazing!

Well, look, the Constitutional Court ruled that there were gross anomalies in the Presidential elections in May 21 2019. The court sanctioned fresh elections resulting from the gross anomalies.

By sanctioning those fresh polls, any responsible people could have brought up a thorough investigation on who was responsible for what happened. But no, those responsible for the wastage of government resources remain free and no one cares a hoot.

Who brought in the Tippex? Why did they so badly need to win the polls and what were the forces behind.

Welcome to the state of unpunished crimes, Malawi.

Then, remember that recently the courts concluded a case in which some 12 people were accused of murdering MacDonald Masambuka, a person with albinism. Well and good. But then, the crime scene remains unpolished as no one has followed up on the big names mentioned in this case.

Remember, Judge Zione Ntaba recused herself when a name of a relative was mentioned in the case. Are we so naïve that no agency can investigate the issue further when everyone else has been asking whether some people engage in the heartless market of human body parts?

Now, as we are still grappling with this unswept crime scene, what really happened in the Robert Chasowa murder? Who was really behind the Issa Njauju death? Who orchestrated the mysterious death of the international crime buster Bob Ntekama?

The questions abound.

When you thought the Tonse Alliance administration would be doing things different, you will be in for a shock only to find that the nation continues with its sweeping trash under the carpet.

There was this issue about a certain man, related to a top government official, went about town swindling close to K200 000 from over 170 job-seekers on the pretense that they would be taken up into the police. Not even an arrest or ‘invitation for an interview’ was carried out. Just like that!

Many Malawians are still waiting for the day an investigation will be instituted on the man who called ACB director Martha Chizuma and recorded her as she poured out some sensitive information about her work. Who was the man? Who sent him? Why? Heaven knows when these questions will be answered as it all ended the day the President said he had reprimanded Chizuma for her misacts.

The Public Affairs Committee of Parliament has been calling several government ministries, departments and agencies to account for some of the errors in their offices. Here you see there is more rot in our midst than we can imagine.

Come to think of it, we hear the Greenbelt Authority could not account for over K13 billion! Tell you what, it will all end after the legislators have chewed up their per diems, no one will be held to account for the gross theft.

And, just like that, Treasury releases K800 million more to the National Registration Bureau and, yes, no one will be brought to book for it.

As long as we remain a state of unpunished crimes, public officers will continue to steal with stinking impunity as nobody cares. The heinous crimes people commit will continue happening as no one dares to cut the umbilical cord.
