Mangochi District Council has approved the 2022/23 budget estimates pegged at K3 billion.

Presenting the estimates last week in Mangochi, the council’s finance committee chairperson Ivy Sande said out of the K3 billion, about K2.8 billion or 93 percent of the total is central government transfers while K236.6 million or 7.8 percent, is locally generated revenue.

She said there was an overall increase in the current budget estimates by K749.2 million from K2.3 billion in 2021/22 fiscal year, representing a 32 percent increase.

Sande said there will be other upward adjustments in the 2022/23 budget estimates.

“Funds from the central government are expected to increase from K2.1 billion to K2.8 billion as this is attributable to a change in government financial year back to 12 months from the nine months in the current financial year,” she said.

In the 2021/22 budget performance report from July 2021 to December 2021, Mangochi District Council received K1.7 billion from central government, representing 81 percent of the budget with expenditure at K1 billion, representing 62 percent consumption rate.

Mangochi East legislator Francesca Masamba expressed dissatisfaction with underperformance of locally generated revenue.

In response, Sande said Mangochi District Council plans to intensify local revenue generation to meet the council’s development aspirations.

According to the budget estimates, constituency development fund will be allocated K720 million from the approved K480 million in the 2021/22 fiscal year. Senior Chief Chowe said Mangochi District Council callled for improvement in school infrasttructure.
