People of Mchezi in Lilongwe District are looking forward to the completion of a police unit in the area amid rising cases of robberies.

Mwadenje security committee chairperson Kasakula Chikamgwera said it was hard for the committee to report robbery cases and suspects to Kanengo Police Station.

Almost ready: The newly-constructed police unit

In a separate interview, group village head Mwadenje was full of praise, saying the police unit will open up opportunities for more development projects in the area.

“This police unit will help us have security officers closer, thereby reducing crime rate which has been a big concern for people in this area.

“It will also attract more developments and businesses as people will be assured of maximum protection of their assets, making the area worth investing in,” he said.

Mchezi Police Unit is being constructed through the Government Enabled Service Delivery (Gesd) project which district councils are implementing with funding from World Bank through the National Local Government Finance Committee.

Lilongwe District Council director of public works Sydney Chiphaka said the projects are community-initiated where people are given the liberty to choose a project they want.

Constructed within the project’s recommended 90 days, the K24 million police unit awaits electricity and water connection before it is operational.
