Mangochi Masongola legislator Ishmael Grant (Independent) has donated relief items to 250 elderly people affected by Tropical Storm Ana.

The relief items include flour, rice, soya pieces, sugar, salt, beans, tea leaves, soap, plastic sheets and water- provided by Malawi Relief Fund-UK, an International Organisation that helps vulnerable people with relief items.

Speaking on Sunday during the handover at Masongola Primary School in Traditional Authority (T/A) Jalasi, Grant said he donated the items after learning the condition of the survivors.

“After hearing that the storm affected people in my area, I assessed the situation and decided to do something,” he said.

Grant thanked Malawi Relief Fund-UK for responding swiftly after approaching them for help.

Malawi Relief Fund-UK country representative Yakub Valli said his organisation responded to the member of Parliament’s (MP) request because they also help people during disasters.

“This support is under Emergency Response Cyclone Ana 2022 Malawi our organisation is implementing,” he said.

Mangochi District Council senior assistant land resources conservation officer Francis Mbirisa thanked the legislator and Malawi Relief Fund-UK for the donation.

One of the beneficiaries, Margret Matola from Nachilapa Village, said the items came at the right time when she was struggling to get money to buy food and basic necessities for her children.
