Police caution kabaza operators

Eastern Region Police Commissioner Casper Chalera has expressed disappointment with rising cases of crimes and accidents involving motorcycle taxis known as kabaza in the region.

He made the call last week in Zomba during the 2022 Quarterly Review Police Management Meeting which showed that crime cases has increased from 1 599 in 2021 to 1 756 in 2022.

Chalera indicated that while some operators are hired by criminals to ferry them on their motorcycles, others have fallen victims, a development he said calls for the setting up of police units to help tame the vice.

“The police advise the kabaza operators to be cautious when working during odd hours to prevent such incidences,” he said.

Francis Simale, a Zomba,-based Kabaza operator, said there is need for collaboration between police, the operators and the community if the malpractice is to be curbed.

He said they are sometimes attacked on duty or hired to carry stolen goods out of ignorance.

“This malpractice can be uprooted if  we and the police and us can jointly work together to detect  people hiring us  if they are thugs or not,” he said.
