 South West Division win National Youth Games Basketball Tourney

 South West Education Division (Swed) Under-17 boys’ basketball team are this year’s National Youth Games champions after defeating Central West Education Division (Cwed) 95-64 yesterday at Civo Stadium court in Lilongwe.

The game was tightly contested as both teams showed determination when they mesmerised fans with brilliant displays.

In other games, Cwed beat Central East Education 32-22 to become Under-15 netball champions.

In Volleyball Under-15 volleyball final, Northern Education Division beat Central Education Division in straight sets.

The games, organised by Malawi School Sports Association (Massa) with funding from Malawi National Council of Sports, are aimed at revamping school sports in the country.

Massa president Blackson Malamula said in an interview,he was happy with the competition.

He said: “The games brought together primary and secondary schools from all the seven education divisions nationwide to groom and identify talent in different sporting codes ranging from football, volleyball, athletics, basketball and netball.”

Sports Council spokesperson Edgar Ntulumbwa said the games will also give associations an opportunity to select players to represent the country at Africa Union of Sports Council Region 5 Youth Games December in Lilongwe.

“We are glad that we have seen officials and coaches from Netball Association of Malawi and Athletics Association of Malawi at the games scouting talent. This is encouraging to the learners. It might be their opportunity to build careers through sports,” he said
