The best of both worlds

G

ospel artist Apostle Enesia Chitheka-Louis lacks no motivation to promote her music business owing to the long years she has been in the trade.

But the launch of her fourth album Soaked In Worship at Comesa Hall in Blantyre on Saturday evening will ride on a rather peculiar and unique element; as it will mark the launch of her yet-to-be released collaboration with Afro-jazz artist Lawi.

For months, the two artists have been working on the remake of one of Lawi’s compositions, Oyera from the album Whistling Song and the redone version will form the core of the activities on Saturday during her album launch where Lawi will be a guest artist.

Listening from the two artists, the collaboration is one which was almost inevitable.

Lawi: I have always enjoyed the music

Chitheka said: “It is a beautiful song. It has helped me in my devotion times when I am alone. It brings me in the presence of the Lord. So, I decided to sing with him so we can deliver it together during the concert.”

And Lawi’s conviction is no less: “She loves the song and her interpretation of the music and words are refreshing. When she sent me a video of how the song ushers her in the presence of God, I got goose bumps.”

The song is a typical Lawi song. The harmony in the carefully coordinated chorused lines is complemented by that jazz touch which has defined Lawi’s trajectory for long. It talks about how the universe and its creations pay homage to their Maker in heaven.

Chitheka says the song, which was recorded during a live concert at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe last year, is the perfect tonic to set up the worship mood during the album launch concert. It has 14 songs and producer OBK did the mastering.

She said: “Together with the whole team, we are prepared. It will be so beautiful to worship together.”

On his part, Lawi said though the recording of the reproduced version has been done remotely, the hour of performing the song together on stage on Saturday will be the most amazing part. From what he said, he is also a fan of Apostle Chitheka’s art.

“It is nice to be in the city again and now for a different experience. I have always enjoyed the music and ministry of Apostle Chitheka and it is a wonderful experience to share the stage with her. Together with The Mango Band, we are ready,” he said.

The Timalira hit-maker allayed fears that he may be awed by the gospel stage, saying that his own music is spiritual, and insisted that gospel music is not what people say it is, but who a person is.

Soaked In Worship album features other artists such as Mr Grey in Mfuneni Ambuye, Ruth Mputeni in Onani Malawi, Sam Mjura in You Are Able, Munthu Ndani features Marlyn Chakwera and Esther Chitheka-Louis and Keziah Louis appears in Ndampeza and Ndinu Nokha.
