TotalEnergies Marketing Malawi Limited on Friday awarded three innovators in the 2022 Startupper Challenge which aims to identify, elevate and accompany the best projects for the creation or development of businesses.

During this year’s awards, Eleanor Phiri was awarded best business creation project, Florence Gulule won best female entrepreneur and Sylvester Chabuka went away with the best business under three years.

Speaking at the event in Blantyre, TotalEnergies Malawi managing director Nerusha Govender said through the challenge, they seek to recognise challenges the youth are experiencing.

She said: “Malawi is one of the countries that have been impacted by climate change and we are looking for solutions that are impacting the environment.

“What we have found in this Startupper challenge is that most of the projects are linked to the management of waste and new solutions to reduce deforestation which is a burning issue.”

The 2022 Startupper Challenge chief judge Wisely Phiri for urged youths to come up with innovations that will address challenges the country is facing.

One of the awardees, Eleanor Phiri, who runs Eco Protein, said they are farming insects for fish feed since reliance on soya beans is unsustainable amid a growing population.
